The Russian Invitation Letter: Who Issues It and How Long It Takes

The invitation letter is the document most students have never heard of before applying to Russia — and the one the entire visa depends on. Understanding it removes most of the anxiety from the timeline.

What it is, and what it is not

The official invitation (приглашение) is issued through the Russian state system at the university’s request. It is not the acceptance letter: the acceptance letter says the university will take you; the invitation is the state document that lets an embassy issue your student visa. You need both, in that order.

The realistic timeline

Through RUSBASE the sequence typically runs: acceptance letter within 7 working days, official invitation within 30 working days, embassy visa in about a week. Most students are in Russia within two months of their first message. Universities differ slightly, and peak season (July–September) adds load — apply earlier than feels necessary.

Where self-managed applications go wrong

Three failure points recur: passport validity too short (it must cover your study period with margin), name spellings that differ between documents and translations, and waiting for the invitation before preparing embassy paperwork instead of in parallel.
